Frequently asked questions

Please find some of the frequently asked questions about DPN on this page.

If your question is still unanswered, please contact us directly. We may add them (anonymously) to the FaQ list and other users will surely appreciate as many questions answered as possible.

Q: In which countries is DPN available?

A: DPN is currently available only in The Netherlands. All the numbers (for calling, receiving calls and SMS settings) are the numbers in The Netherlands, thus, from international perspective – should be preceded with +31 prefix.

Q: Is DPN subscription-based service?

A: DPN does not ask for a subscription. Number assignment is free – anyone may apply for a DPN number. However, to use the number, one must buy pre-paid call-switch credits from DPN.

Q: What are the costs connected to using DPN?

A: DPN is charging it’s switching services about 7ct/min (depending on the prepaid size, can be less).
This applies to both outgoing and incoming calls. We are asking this price not just in order to maintain our switching service, but also because each call (both incoming and outgoing) costs us as well. Switched calls are originating from our PBX, and we must pay for them, too. In order to maintain the privacy of your number for incoming calls, we must call you from our switch. In order to preserve the privacy of your outgoing call, we must execute this call from you towards 3rd party.
Thus, part of this cost is covering the expenses with telecoms, and part for maintaining our service.

Q: What if I don’t want to be disturbed at all on my DPN number for the timebeing?

A: There are numerous DnD (Do not Disturb) options for your DPN number available. You may set them universally or even per-day so that your phone is reachable in one way over work-days and another over the weekend. Also, if you’ve specified your e-mail address, you may receive voicemail-to-email from those callers. In the last case, you will simply get wave files as attachments from DPN, with voicemails from people calling you while DnD rules are enabled.

Q: How can I add DPN webapp to the home-screen of my phone (or desktop)?

Adding the DPN webapp to your home-screen is easy, for detailed steps see [these instructions].

Q: Why do I have to press hash-key ("#") when receiving a call from DPN?

A: This is needed for full protection of your privacy. If a call could be rejected or not answered without this step, the caller could get your original voicemail as a response (voicemail from your mobile provider). This voicemail message usually contains your (real) name and/or your original phone number, and in this case, the whole point of having DPN to protect your privacy would be missed.
In DPN, you ALWAYS have to confirm the acceptance of the call. Any other action (not responding, declining, or doing nothing when asked to press “#”) will either a) hangup the call for that caller or b) send the caller to DPN’s voicemail-to-email (depending on your privacy/DnD settings). If you have no DnD settings, by default the call will be rejected if not explicitly accepted, and your original phone number is still private.

Q: Can I call other DPN users directly, on their extensions, when I'm using DPN?

A: Yes, and in this case both your numbers stay fully private. You can call another DPN user from within the DPN app by typing only their extension (6 digits) in the dialer. You can save their extension in the favorites and give it a name/alias. In this case, you will reach other DPN users while not knowing their number, and they will receive calls from you while also knowing only that it’s a DPN user. Your real name and number will stay private.

Q: Can I call international or premium numbers with DPN?

A: No, at this moment dialing international and premium numbers is not allowed/supported. In the future, we’ll add this as an extra service, requiring extra dial credits, but at this moment you can only call within The Netherlands.

Q: How should I publish my DPN number, for example in an advertisement or on a website, if I want to be reached (even by unknown people or -say- customers) but stay private?

A: You should point them to the DPN dial-in number and then publish your extension (bel-code). Thus, you should say something like “Call 085-125 0000 and then choose 123456 to reach me”. (“123456” here is just an example, you should substitute it with your personal extension number, which you received after joining DPN service (you can also always see it in the web app).
